Unidentified Temple

Directly across from the look out we stopped at along the shores of Sun Moon Lake was a large, still-unknown-to-me, temple complex. Since it was a weekday, it was pretty calm.

That is the Wen Wu Temple.

Apparently there were villages and temples that had to be relocated after the increased water level at Sun Moon Lake (the Japanese dammed it in the 30s).

So the villages around the lake sold their temples to the Japanese administration, which then build a single but larger temple to replace the two.

Thanks Michael! I had read a bit about how the lake was formed with the Japanese dammed it, but I had no idea about the temples!

Beautiful pictures. I would have definitely made the offering to light a stick of incense and send up a few prayers of thanks at the opportunity to visit such a beautiful place.
